Which of my elected representatives voted for this bill?
ALL EIGHT COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS, PLUS COUNTY EXECUTIVE IKE LEGGETT, VOTED FOR THIS BILL. Bill 23-07 was introduced by Duchy Trachtenberg, and co-sponsored by Marc Elrich and Valerie Ervin. What do these representatives have in common? How could they be so at odds with the outcry from the public (85% of the over 2500 calls/emails the county council received were against this bill) and blatantly ignore the wishes of the people who voted for them?
All three of Bill 23-07 sponsors had the endorsement of the Montgomery County Education Associations Teachers Union (the Apple Ballot). Two of these candidates, Ervin and Trachtenberg, were new to the County Council in 2006, and unseated council incumbents. Many pollsters attribute to this to the “power of the apple.” The Apple Ballot, which does not represent the teachers but the teachers union, regularly endorses the same candidates endorsed by NOW and NARAL (the most liberal). Ready to take your county government back from the teachers’ union? In 2008, remember those are rotten apples.
